Prerequisites 
 
Math 200 and 205, or consent of the instructor. 
 
Synopsis of course content 
 
This is a first course in algebraic topology. Topics to be covered 
include: 
     
  • the fundamental group and covering spaces; 
  • cell complexes; 
  • homology and cohomology, singular, simplicial and cellular; 
  • applications such as the Brower fixed point theorem and the 

  • Jordan curve theorem. 
 
Textbooks 
 
The text will probably be: 
 

M. J. Greenberg and J. R. Harper: Algebraic Topology, a first 
course, Addison Wesley Publishing Company.
