Research Student Mentoring
I have supervised the following undergraduate research students:
- Kevin Murgas (Summer 2015): Bone remodeling as a spatial evolutionary game.
- Tayyab Wasim (Summer 2014): Field cancerization dynamics in the GI tract.
- Michael Lin (Summer 2013): PDE models for cancer metastasis formation.
- Mandy Jiang (2012 - 2013): dynamic random graph models of sexual networks; infection dynamics of HPV in adolescent sexual networks.
- Andrew Yuan (Summer 2012): Modeling of the quiescent zone in bone remodeling unit.
Elementary School Teaching
Besides standard University level teaching, I am also interested in teaching mathematics and science to younger students at the level of Elementary School. During my time in Vancouver, I participated in UBC's Let's Talk Science program, and collaborated with Mr. McNicholl from Tecumseh Elementary School. I regularly visited his class (gifted students in grades 5 and 6) and explored with them aspects of theoretical physics and mathematics. It is very astonishing what can be achieved with those relatively young students!! Here a little selection of topics we explored:
- Cellular Automata in Mathematical Biology
- How does Crook's Radiometer work?
- How Does the Curvature of the Tracks Influence the Racing Time of a 400m Sprint?
- The Borel-Cantelli Lemma and the Typewriting Monkey
- Zipf's Law and the Size of Cities
