How I Quit My Ph.D. and Learned to Love Data Science
Abstract:
After 7 semesters as a doctoral student in math and operations research, I left graduate school for a career in data science. In this talk, I will discuss some of the challenges of real world data science. I will lead a whirlwind tour through some of my challenges in industry, including big data, streaming data analysis, long-tailed data, collaborative software development, open source software, math modeling, and cryptic Java errors. My objective in this talk is to guide current students who are considering a career in industry, inform researchers about possible areas of study, and assist instructors in how they can better prepare their students.
