Multidimensional data in a virtual environment intervention for chronic disease: from coding to visualization
Abstract:
We have established the feasibility and preliminary utility of an interactive, innovative diabetes self-management program using a virtual environment (VE), and are currently testing its efficacy in a randomized clinical trial. This line of research requires a complex analysis of the multidimensional data (i.e., voice, text, activity, surveys, clinical data) we continue to collect in the VE and from participants. Spatially transforming these different types of related data has the potential to reveal thematic patterns and relationships that could be compared to the way the natural world is perceived and is not possible with traditional statistical analysis. The visualization of these multidimensional data will significantly add to our knowledge gained about the use and effects of this program; would help us to determine how to model these types of data; and is vital to inform future larger studies in this area. Through funded work from RENCI, we have started to develop a model for providing a richer level of data visualization and analysis.
