Visualizing co-diagnostic networks: From ICD-9 codes to an ego-net tool to support clinical decision-making
Abstract:
Medicine tends to be problem-centric: a patient presents with a particular condition, and the health care system responds by attempting to solve each problem as it is presented. Network-based approaches have the potential to enable health care providers focus attention on the dynamic, interconnected characteristics associated with health, behaviors, and health care systems. Through such a relationship-centric perspective, we have been developing a co-diagnostic tool based on International Classification of Disease codes from DUHS patient records aggregated across demographic groups (age, sex, gender), and are preparing a user study to examine practitioners perspectives on integrating such a tool into their work flows.
