An angular momentum-mass inequality for rotating black holes
Abstract:
I will discuss a recent paper of Sergio Dain which gives a lower bound on the ADM mass of an axisymmetric spacetime in terms of its total angular momentum. The result applies to maximal spacelike slices of asymptotically flat spacetimes containing black holes, with certain symmetry assumptions and topological restrictions. Equality holds precisely for slices of the extreme Kerr spacetime. The primary tool for the proof is the calculus of variations. Connections will be made to the theory of harmonic maps into the hyperbolic plane.
