On the Chow group of the product of two curves
Abstract:
A small result on the Chow group of zero cycles of the product of two curves will be discussed. The base field will be algebraically closed of positive transcendence degree. Prerequisites for the talk are: A basic understanding of the algebraic geometry of curves and surfaces over a field. This includes the language of schemes. Although the only schemes which appear will be varieties over fields, we deal with these in ways which are not easily described without the language of schemes. We won't have time to cover background material on schemes. Also one must have some acquaintance with intersection theory on a smooth projective surface and with the group of divisor classes. The talk may be accessible to graduate students who have had at least one course specifically on algebraic geometry. (A course on Riemann surfaces is not sufficient background.)
