P-adic representations of local Galois groups
Abstract:
We will describe parts of Fontaine's theory of p-adic representations of Galois groups of local fields of residue characteristic p. Ideas from p-adic Hodge theory allows the classifications of representations of `geometric type' in a manner analogous to, but richer than the theory of l-adic representations. It also allows one to `write down' many examples of representations purely abstractly. We will introduce the basic notions, discuss their significance, and look at some examples. For students, a reasonable introduction to these ideas might be Fontaine's talk from the ICM, Warsaw 1983.
