PREP Workshop UNIX Software Installation |
Downloading Software
AOL Instant Messenger
There are many AOL clients available for Unix, we recommend GAIM which can downloaded in source form from http://gaim.sourceforge.net or as a RedHat 7.x RPM from our mirror at gaim-0.53-1.i386.rpm.
You will need a screenname which you can create by going to http://aim.aol.com/aimnew/newreg/register2.adp
Once you install and connect to the AOL service, you can join the chatroom PrepWorkshop to communicate with any other participants who may be online.
Robust Audio Tool
Download RAT (Robust Audio Tool) in source form from http://www-mice.cs.ucl.ac.uk/multimedia/software/rat/index.html our as a RedHat 7.x RPM from our local mirror at rat-4.2.19-1.i386.rpm.
Once you have RAT installed, you can connect to our audio conference by running it with the command rat 152.3.25.9/4096.
VNC
Download TightVNC in source/binary form from http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html or as a RedHat-7.x RPM from our local mirror at VNC Viewer and VNC Server.
Once you install this application, you can use the vncviewer to connect to remote VNC desktops. In our case you will tunnel an encrypted connection through SSH and connect to our workshop computer as localhost:10. We'll send more instructions on this closer to the workshop.
If you want to share a desktop, you can run the vncserver and establish a password for viewing/controlling the desktop. Use this carefully as anyone can connect to your desktop if they have the proper password. Note that the desktop created under Unix is not your current one, but rather a virtual desktop that you can then connect to and allow others to connect to.
OpenSSH
Most Unix systems already have ssh installed, if so, then you can skip this step. Otherwise, you can grab the source code at http://www.openssh.com.
To set up the SSH tunnel, you will need to bring up a terminal prompt and execute :
ssh -l username -L5910:workshop:5900 cauchy.math.duke.edu
where username is the username you received when you registered for an account for the conference. You will need to enter the password you submitted for this account as well. Once connected the tunnel is established and you can minimize the terminal window (don't close it though).
