Mathematica Tutor

Part 2: Notebooks and Cells

Mathematica notebooks consist of sequences of cells. The various kinds of cells are listed in the Style submenu of the Format menu.

  1. Move the pointer until it becomes a horizontal I-beam. Then click. A cell insertion bar will appear. Type some text. It will appear in a new cell. By default, new cells are Mathematica input cells.

  2. You can put more than one line in the same cell. Enter
    2^3
and press RETURN. (Don't press SHIFT yet!) Now enter
    8^(1/3)
and press SHIFT-RETURN. Both expressions in the cell will be evaluated.
