Avoid Spatio-Temporal Language



Interactive texts, unlike books, are usually neither linear in space (beginning-end) nor time (start-finish). As a result, many traditional phrases — "now we ...", "as before, ...", "in the previous section ...", "you will see that ...", etc. — may be inappropriate. They can be extremely disorienting to a reader who has followed a circuitous path to the present location. In general, when writing, it is best to think of each location within the text as a starting point, and to speak only in terms of where to go from "here" and "now".
