The One-Dimensional Heat Equation

Part 2: Changing the Diffusivity Constant

  1. Modify your worksheet to approximate the solution of the initial/boundary value problem obtained by changing alpha to 2:

  2. Before you begin changing things, think about what needs to be changed and what can be left alone. Study the time snapshots of this approximation.

  3. Now change alpha to 3, so that our equations become

  4. Again, study the time snapshots.

  5. How does increasing the constant alpha change the graphical form of the solution of the initial/boundary value problem? Explain this change in the solution in terms of the symbolic form of the approximations.
